Jason McCartney MP met staff and patients at the Huddersfield Royal Infirmary Elective Surgical Hub, which performs elective surgeries for local people close to home. It’s one of only 8 Elective Surgery Hubs in the UK.
Surgical hubs, which are separated from emergency services, are part of national plans to increase capacity for elective care, with more dedicated operating theatres and beds.
The hubs exclusively perform planned surgery across various specialties including ophthalmology, general surgery, orthopaedics, gynaecology, ear nose and throat, and urology.
Hubs bring together the skills and expertise of staff under one roof, with protected facilities and theatres, helping to deliver shorter waits for surgery.
The hub beds are designated for patients waiting for planned surgical procedures, and are protected from emergency admissions, reducing the risk of short-notice cancellations.
The fully staffed hub at HRI have cleared the long term waiting list backlogs resulting from Covid through an all-round massive team effort by all teams and includes weekend working.
There is actually a waiting list of nurses who want to join the Elective Surgery Hub team!
