Holmfirth, Lindley, Crosland Moor and Netherton
'Thornton Lodge
Project'
Jason joined Thornton Lodge residents to tidy-up overgrown grassland near their homes. Up to 30 members of Springdale Street were out in force at the only green space on their busy road. And they hope to retain the site as a green space, despite plans for housing. Eager helpers cleared litter, cut grass, built steps and enjoyed a community lunch. They were joined by Lockwood Imam Qari M Abbas who was supporting the project. There are plans to build five houses on the land, but in the meantime residents want to use it for children to play or for elderly people to sit out.
Jason said: “I was delighted to help Rauf and his neighbours tidy up this green space on Springdale Street. I really hope we can stop the planned building of five houses on a very rare bit of inner town green space. We had about 30 people helping us clear the waste away and it was great to see the community come out and work together. Hopefully the children and community will be able to enjoy the area now.”
'Jason Fights to
save his local Post Office'
Jason is trying to save his local post office
from closure. Jason lives a few hundred yards from Holmbridge Post Office. It is
one of nine branches in south Kirklees facing the axe. Jason says “I've spent
many hours in Holmbridge Post Office getting reaction from the customers. It's a
real hub of the community offering teas, coffees, bacon butties and dry cleaning
along with regular postal services.”
The original Holmbridge Post Office closed in 2001 but Kath and Trevor Bellamy
opened the current branch in the shop adjoining the Corn Loft Guest House,
Woodhead Road, two years later. The catchment area covers the upper Holme Valley
meaning a long walk to the next nearest Post Office. “People from Holme would
have to trek five miles into Holmfirth, that's before even trying to get a
parking space and then having to queue up.”
Jason says “We're launching a petition at the Holmbridge branch to keep it open
and would urge all customers to pop in and sign it.”
Four other branches in the Colne Valley constituency are on the Post Office’s
hit list: Halifax Road, Birchencliffe; Acre Street, Oakes; Quarmby Road, Quarmby
and Wooldale Road, Wooldale. Jason says “I'll be fighting Post Office closures
wherever the local community wants to keep their local branch open.”
'Crewe
& Nantwich By Election'
Jason and members of the team spent a hot day in Crewe helping win the "safe" Labour seat for the Conservative Candidate Edward Timpson.

'Pub
Landlord is Conservative Choice for Lindley'
Pub landlord
Bob Steer has been selected
as the Conservative candidate for Lindley in next May's Kirklees council
elections.
Bob runs the Cavalry Arms public house on Halifax Road. Birchencliffe, with his
wife Barbara. Before pulling pints, Bob worked in telecommunications in
Huddersfield and Halifax. "I hear all the regulars telling me their gripes and
moans about Lindley and now I can help do something about it if I'm elected next
May," said Bob. "I'm looking forward to making Lindley an even better place to
live, work and play."
Bob and Barbara enjoy working with community at the Cavalry and see it as a
focal point for local issues.

Survey'
" I want to hear from you".
That's the message from Jason McCartney who is writing to every household, all
48,000 of them, in the Colne and Holme valleys along with Lindley and Crosland
Moor.
Jason is asking for people's opinions on everything from health, crime,
transport and tax to bin collections and recycling.
"I've already been knocking on doors in Lindley, Brockholes, Golcar and
Netherton recently where crime and NHS cuts topped the agenda but there are also
big concerns over road safety, parking and dog mess," said Mr.McCartney. "The
feedback from this massive survey will help shape the issues I tackle."

'Magic
Meltham'
The Colne Valley Conservatives worked hard for a fantastically encouraging result in the Meltham Town Council by-election on 18 Oct 2007. Donald Bamforth, pictured with parliamentary candidate Jason McCartney, came second beating the Lib Dems into third place. The campaign saw volunteers deliver over 3,000 pieces of literature, canvass hundreds of households and knock up on the day itself right up until early evening. Donald said "We've shown that the Conservatives are once again a force to be reckoned with in Meltham." Jason added that "It was a team effort and really sets us up for the Kirklees Council elections in May".
